I’ve been waiting for it for months. The new Mac OS release! I’ve been checking every day since the beginning of the month, except today. Of course, that’s the day it came out.
I was rather curious how well this would work. Apple is relying on its app store for this release, so I feared that the download would take forever over wireless. It didn’t. It took about a half hour, but I could do other things while it downloaded.
When it finished downloading, I ran Time Machine (another half hour). Then I crossed my fingers and toes and let it rip.
That took another half hour.
Now it’s done, and I have to say that I like it so far. It adds a few more gestures for use with the trackpad. None of them are obscene, though the vertical scrolling is different than what I’m used to. It’s disorienting but not a killer. My favorite is a three-finger swipe up which lays all of the windows out so that I can easily switch to one that might be buried.
The one “gotcha” that I’ve found so far is that one of the widgets that I like no longer seems to work. It’s a currency converter, which I love having handy. I’m sure it will get fixed, but it’s a small annoyance for now.
Today, I’m going to do some more work on a project, so I will see if there are more adverse effects. My biggest concern is whether my printer, a 13 year old HP, will still work. (It’s an awesome printer! It prints on both sides of the paper and is fast. Best feature of all? Despite using it lots, we’ve only changed the toner cartridge once in all of that time!)
